Nowadays, you basically can’t live without interaction and digitalization in every perspective of life. Yet, what about we put two together and make it Digital Interaction? Today, the topic is Digital Interaction, a combination of AR and 2.5D design! We have been talking a lot about the digital transformation and AR recently, so in this article, we are going to cover more about the design, especially 2.5D, or most of the people would call it “Fake 3D”!
What is 2.5D ?
2.5D is computer graphics term for creating the impression of a three-dimensional scene without using full 3D rendering.
Compared with 3D design, which requires higher quality of software, 2.5D only needs PS/AI that is already common enough for every graphic designer. However, to create a 2.5D design, instead, highly depends on the designer's skill, such as "three-dimensional" drawing concept.
2.5D in Life
We can also see a lot of 2.5D Design in the daily life, such as posters, infographics, web, and games.
2.5D Business Application - Poster and Infographic
Poster and Infographic are the most commonly-seen examples of 2.5D design. In which you would see the overall style is based on “Monument Valley”, and use 2.5D to show clear steps of Starbucks staff promotion system. It’s a great way to demonstrate the visual and conginitve logic.
Monument Valley is an indie puzzle game developed and published by Ustwo Games. Its visual style was inspired by Japanese prints, minimalist sculpture, and indie games Windosill, Fez, and Sword & Sworcery. The art was designed such that each frame would be worthy of public display.
Another example of 2.5D Design is often used on web pages (above). More and more companies choose to set up an "image page" on the official website. Though traditional media certainly has its value, but there is nothing better than adding 2.5D to show a lively yet professional image, right?
In terms of 2.5D game design, in addition to the classic, as mentioned above, "Monument Valley", we can also see that more and more game designs are integrated with 2.5D. The motion and dynamic is much more lively and the hardware equipment requirement is much lower, which makes it a much better choice for web game in Japan and South Korea.
